Red Rock is a small village on the northern coast of New South Wales, Australia. It is located near Coffs Harbour, right by the Corindi River. This area is part of the Mid North Coast and is surrounded by beautiful National Parks. In 2016, about 303 people lived in Red Rock.

The village gets its name from the Red Rock headland, which is about 20 meters (66 feet) high. This headland is famous for its bright red color. This color comes from a lot of a type of rock called jasper, which is a red stone. Scientists believe this rock formation is more than 300 million years old.

The original owners of the land around Red Rock are the Gumbaynggirr people. They have lived in this area for thousands of years.

History of Red Rock

Red Rock is located in the traditional lands of the Gumbaynggirr people. European farmers first settled here in the 1800s, near what is now Corindi Beach.

The Red Rock Headland's Importance

The Red Rock headland is a very special and sacred place for the Gumbaynggirr people. It is also the site of a sad event that happened in 1841. This event is known as the Bloodrock massacre.

During this time, mounted police entered a Gumbaynggirr campsite and began shooting. They chased people to the Corindi River and continued shooting. Some people were also forced off the headland. Today, a special memorial stands at the bottom of the headland. It honors those who were affected by this event and is a place for quiet thought and respect.

Fun Things to Do in Red Rock

Red Rock is mostly a holiday village, which means many houses are empty for most of the year. However, during school holidays, it becomes a very popular spot! If you want to camp, you often need to book a spot years in advance.

Village Facilities

In the village, you can find a few helpful places. There is a lifesaving club, a community center, and a bowling club. You can also visit a general store for supplies and a caravan park for campers.

Exploring the Outdoors

The area has lovely beaches, and the river is great for many activities. You can go swimming, kayaking, or snorkeling in the calm waters. The beach to the south can be a bit rough, so it's not recommended for younger children to swim there. However, it's a fantastic spot for fishing and for local bodyboarders to catch waves. It's also easy to cross the river mouth and explore the National Park on the northern side.
