Redd's Pond is a small body of water located in Marblehead, Massachusetts. This pond is named after a woman named Wilmot Redd, who lived nearby many years ago.

The Salem Witch Trials: A Look Back at History

In 1692, a very serious event happened in Salem Village, which is now called Danvers. Some girls there claimed that they were being harmed by witchcraft. This led to many people being accused of being witches.

Who Was Wilmot Redd?

Wilmot Redd was one of the people accused during this time. She was an older woman from Marblehead. People in her town, especially local fishermen, knew her as "Mammy Redd." She was married to a fisherman named Samuel Redd.

Wilmot Redd's Accusation and Trial

A special order for Wilmot Redd's arrest was issued in Salem. On May 31, she was taken to Salem Village for an early questioning. After this, she was officially accused and put in the Salem jail.

Her trial took place four months later in Salem Towne. Wilmot Redd said she was innocent and denied all the charges against her. However, she was not allowed to have a lawyer to help defend her.

The Outcome of the Trial

On September 17, Wilmot Redd was found guilty and sentenced to death. Just four days later, on September 21, she and seven other people were put to death in Salem. This happened on a place called Gallows Hill or a hill nearby.

Wilmot Redd was the only person from Marblehead who was put to death because of the Salem Witch Trials. Her small house was located right next to Old Burial Hill, on the southeast side of the pond that now carries her name.
