Reds Legends of Crosley Field is a cool group of bronze sculptures created by artist Tom Tsuchiya. You can find them at the main entrance of Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. These sculptures show four famous players from the Cincinnati Reds baseball team who played at Crosley Field. The players are Ted Kluszewski, Ernie Lombardi, Joe Nuxhall, and Frank Robinson. Fans got to vote to choose which players would be turned into statues!
The statue of Ted Kluszewski was shown to the public on March 31, 2003. This was a special day because it was also the official opening of Great American Ball Park. Later that year, the statues of Joe Nuxhall and Frank Robinson were also revealed. Finally, Ernie Lombardi's statue was unveiled on June 28, 2004.
What the Statues Show
These statues are super unique because they show the four players acting like they are in a real baseball game! They are placed on "Crosley Terrace," which looks like the infield of the old Crosley Field.
Here's what's happening:
- Joe Nuxhall is pitching the baseball.
- Frank Robinson is swinging his bat at home plate.
- Ernie Lombardi is crouching behind home plate, ready to catch the ball.
- Ted Kluszewski is watching the game from the on-deck circle.
People really love how these statues tell a story together. It's like a moment frozen in time from a baseball game!
