The Keckiella corymbosa is a type of flowering shrub. It is also known as the redwood keckiella, red beardtongue, or red shrubby penstemon. This plant belongs to the plantain family.

This special plant grows only in California. It is found in the forests and chaparral areas. You can see it in the central and northern parts of the state.

About the Redwood Keckiella

The Keckiella corymbosa is a slender plant. It grows straight up to about half a meter (about 1.5 feet) tall. It is usually less than a meter (about 3 feet) wide.

Leaves and Branches

This plant has branches that spread out. Its leaves grow in pairs, one across from the other. The leaves are narrow and shaped like an oval. They are usually one to three centimeters long. The edges of the leaves can be smooth or have small, faint teeth.

Flowers and Their Parts

The plant produces many flowers in a group. This group of flowers is called an inflorescence. Each flower grows on a small, hairy stalk called a pedicel.

Each flower looks like a tube that opens into a wide mouth. It has three narrow, pointed parts at the bottom. These are called lobes. There are also two upper lobes that form a straight or curved lip.

The flowers are quite colorful. They can be bright red, orange-red, or deep pink. They are up to 4 centimeters (about 1.5 inches) wide and 3 centimeters (about 1 inch) long.

Inside the flower's mouth, you will find long, thin parts called stamens. These stamens help the plant reproduce. There is also one flat, yellow, hairy stamen that is sterile. This special stamen is called a staminode.
