Refrain facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A refrain is a part of a song or poem that repeats regularly. Think of it like a catchy phrase or section that comes back again and again. In songs, the refrain is usually called the chorus.

The chorus often sounds different from the other parts of the song, called verses. It might have a different tune (melody), beat (rhythm), or even a fuller sound with more instruments. It usually feels more energetic and louder than the verses.

In music, a refrain has two main parts: the words (called lyrics) and the tune (melody). Sometimes, the words in a refrain might change a little each time it repeats. But you can still recognize it as the refrain because the tune stays the same. If there are rhymes, they usually stay the same too, even if some words change. In popular music, the chorus is usually the most memorable part. It often follows a verse and is different from a bridge, which is another contrasting section. Many popular songs, especially from the mid-1900s, were mostly made up of just a chorus.

The word "refrain" comes from an old Latin word, refringere, and later from an Old French word, refraindre. Both of these words mean "to repeat."
