Refuge is a small, unincorporated community. It is located in Washington County, Mississippi, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but no local government.

West of Refuge, right on the Mississippi River, was a spot called Refuge Landing. This was likely a place where boats could stop.

History of Refuge

Early Days and Plantation Life

Refuge has a long history. In 1831, a man named Francis Griffin bought land here. He chose a high ridge next to the Mississippi River. On this land, he started a large farm called "Refuge Plantation."

By 1850, many people were working on the plantation. These were enslaved people who were forced to work. The main house, known as the Refuge Plantation House, was built to overlook the river. It was surrounded by big oak trees. A levee system protected the house and land from the river. Today, this house is a great example of a plantation home from the mid-1800s in Washington County.

Community Growth and Changes

Refuge once had its own post office. In the year 1900, the community had about 30 people living there.

There was also an old cemetery called Old Refuge Cemetery. It was located north of the community, but it no longer exists today.

Modern Developments in Refuge

New Attractions and Connections

In recent years, Refuge has seen some new additions. In 2007, a place called Harlow's Casino Resort opened its doors in the community.

A big change happened in 2010. The Greenville Bridge was completed and opened. This bridge connects Refuge, Mississippi, with Shives, Arkansas, across the Mississippi River. It makes travel between the two states much easier.
