Refuge is a small, quiet place in Houston County, Texas, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county. In the year 2000, about 27 people lived there.
The Story of Refuge
The area where Refuge is now was first settled a long time ago, even before the year 1900. In the mid-1930s, the community had four stores, two churches, and many homes spread out. After World War II, many people moved away. However, by the mid-1960s, Refuge still had a cemetery, a sawmill (a place where wood is cut), and several homes. In the early 1990s, it was known as a spread-out rural community. Its population was 27 people in 2000.
Refuge was supposedly named because it was a "refuge" or safe place during attacks from Native American groups. It was originally known as Fort Brown.
