Why Was It Built?
In 2018, the city government of Madrid decided to build this monument. City leaders felt it was important to show thanks to refugees and immigrants. They said these people helped build the city of Madrid.
What Does It Look Like?
A talented artist from Brazil, Bel Borba, designed the statue. He adapted it from another work he made called Homage to Migrants. The monument stands on a large block made of concrete and granite. This block measures 180 x 100 x 180 centimeters.
On top of the block is a bronze sculpture that weighs 960 kilograms. It shows 16 figures, both men and women. Some of them are holding babies. All the figures are seated and wear life vests, as if they are waiting for help.
When Was It Made?
Work on installing the monument began on May 13, 2019. It was opened to the public in 2019.
