The Refugium Range is a small group of mountains and hills located on the northern part of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It's part of a bigger mountain system called the Vancouver Island Ranges, which are themselves part of the Insular Mountains. This special area covers about 239 square kilometers (92 square miles).

What Makes the Refugium Range Special?

The name "Refugium Range" was given in 1981 by a group of explorers. They discovered something very interesting about these mountains. During the last Ice Age, huge sheets of ice called glaciers covered most of North America.

Surviving the Ice Age

The explorers found that some peaks in the Refugium Range were higher than 700 meters (about 2,300 feet). These tall peaks poked out above the glaciers during the Ice Age. This means they were not covered by ice.

Because these areas were not covered, plants and animals could survive there. A place where living things survive a big change, like an ice age, is called a "refugium." The Refugium Range became a safe haven for life.

Unique Plants and Animals

Since these parts of the Refugium Range were never covered by ice, they have very unique plants. These plants might be different from those found in other areas that were covered by glaciers. This makes the Refugium Range an important place for scientists to study how life survived the Ice Age.

Where is the Refugium Range?

The Refugium Range is located on the Brooks Peninsula. This peninsula sticks out from the northern coast of Vancouver Island. It is a wild and beautiful area.

Brooks Peninsula Provincial Park

The Brooks Peninsula is protected as a provincial park. This helps to keep its special environment safe. The park is known for its rugged coastline, old-growth forests, and diverse wildlife. The Refugium Range is a key part of this park's natural beauty and history.
