College Football Career
In 1986, Reggie Cobb joined the Tennessee Volunteers football team. He was part of a very strong group of new players. These included future NFL stars like Alvin Harper and Antone Davis. Reggie spent his first year as a "redshirt" player, which means he practiced with the team but didn't play in games. This allowed him to gain experience and save a year of eligibility.
In 1987, Reggie started playing in games. In his very first game, he ran for 138 yards against Iowa. He scored three touchdowns against Mississippi State. He also had a big game against Auburn, scoring the game-tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Reggie finished his first college season with an amazing 1,197 rushing yards. He also had a school record of 1,721 all-purpose yards. His 20 touchdowns (17 rushing and 3 receiving) tied a record for his conference. He was named the MVP of the 1988 Peach Bowl after running for 146 yards and two touchdowns against Indiana.
In the 1988 season, Reggie faced some challenges. He missed several games due to an ankle injury. This caused his rushing yards to drop to 547. However, he still had a career-high 182 rushing yards in a game against Duke.
In 1989, Reggie faced some difficulties that led to a temporary suspension from the team. After working through these issues, he was able to rejoin his teammates. He played alongside another rising star, Chuck Webb, forming a powerful running back duo known as "Cobb-Webb." Reggie had a huge game against Auburn, running for 225 yards and a 79-yard touchdown. However, Reggie faced further challenges and was later dismissed from the team before the end of the 1989 season.
During his time at Tennessee, Reggie Cobb ran for 2,360 yards and 26 touchdowns. He also caught 33 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns.
