Reginald III (also known as Renaud) was an important ruler in the Middle Ages. He was born around 1087 and died in 1148. His father was Stephen I, Count of Burgundy, and his mother was Beatrice of Lorraine, Countess of Burgundy.
Reginald became the count of Mâcon in 1102, sharing the title with his brother, William of Vienne. A "count" was a powerful noble who ruled over a large area of land called a "county." Later, in 1127, Reginald became the count of Burgundy.
His mother, Beatrice of Lorraine, was the daughter of Duke Gerard of Lorraine. Interestingly, Pope Callixtus II was Reginald's uncle, meaning he was his father's brother.
Reginald's Rule and Challenges
Reginald III wanted his lands to be independent. He declared that his county of Burgundy was free from the control of Emperor Lothair III. This was a big step, as it meant he wanted to rule without answering to the Emperor.
However, this led to conflict. King Conrad III of Germany defeated Reginald. As a result, Reginald had to give up all his lands east of the Jura mountains.
The name of the region Franche-Comté comes from Reginald's title. Franc-compte means "free count." This shows his desire for independence.
Family Life
Around the year 1130, Reginald married a woman named Agatha of Lorraine. She was the daughter of Duke Simon I of Lorraine.
Reginald and Agatha had one daughter together. Her name was Beatrice.
The End of His Reign
In 1148, Reginald III was traveling in France. He became very sick suddenly and passed away.
Because he died so quickly, he could not choose someone to rule for his young daughter, Beatrice. His daughter, Beatrice I, then became the new ruler of Burgundy.
