Stephen I (born in 1065, died May 17, 1102) was a powerful count known as "the Rash." He ruled as the Count of Burgundy, Mâcon, and Vienne from 1097 until he passed away.
Stephen I: A Medieval Count
Stephen I came from a very important and powerful family. His father was William I, Count of Burgundy, and his mother was Stephanie. Stephen also had a younger brother who later became Pope Callixtus II.
Stephen became the Count of Burgundy in 1097. This happened after his older brother, Reginald II, died during the First Crusade. Stephen himself took part in a later journey called the Crusade of 1101. He was a leader in the army of Stephen of Blois. He helped capture a city called Ancyra and fought in a very difficult battle known as the Battle of Mersivan.
Sadly, Stephen died in the Battle of Ramla in 1102. After his death, his oldest son, Reginald III, took over as count.
Stephen's Family Life
Stephen was married to a woman named Beatrice of Lorraine. Stephen and Beatrice had several children together:
- Isabella, who married Hugh, Count of Champagne.
- Reginald III, Count of Burgundy, who became count after his father.
- William III of Mâcon.
- Clemence/Margaret , who was born around 1100 and died in 1163. She married Guigues IV of Albon, who was a Dauphin de Viennois. They were the parents of Guigues V of Albon.
