William I (born 1020 – died November 12, 1087) was a powerful ruler known as William the Great. People also called him Tête Hardie, which means "the Stubborn". He was the Count of Burgundy from 1057 to 1087. He also ruled Mâcon from 1078 to 1087.
William was the son of Reginald I, Count of Burgundy and Alice of Normandy. Alice was the daughter of Richard II, Duke of Normandy. William had many important children, including Pope Callixtus II, who became a leader of the Christian church.
Becoming a Count
In 1057, William became Count of Burgundy after his father passed away. He ruled a large area. This land was even bigger than the modern-day Franche-Comté region in France.
William died in 1087 in a city called Besançon. At that time, Besançon was an important independent city. It was part of the Holy Roman Empire and located within the County of Burgundy. William was buried in the Cathedral of St John in Besançon.
