Raymond of Burgundy (born around 1070 – died May 24, 1107) was an important ruler in Galicia. He governed this region as a vassal (a loyal supporter) of Alfonso VI of León and Castile. Alfonso VI was known as the "Emperor of All Spain" because he was a very powerful king.
Raymond ruled Galicia from about 1090 until his death. He was the fourth son of Count William I of Burgundy and Stephanie. Raymond married Urraca, who would later become the queen of León. She was also the daughter and heir of King Alfonso VI. Raymond and Urraca had a son named Alfonso VII, who later became a king himself.
Coming to Spain
It's not fully clear when Raymond and his cousin, Henry of Burgundy, first arrived in Spain. They probably came with the army of Duke Odo I of Burgundy in 1086.
In April 1087, this army left a battle at Tudela. Most of the soldiers went home, but Duke Odo and his group traveled west. By July 21, 1087, they were likely in Burgos, at King Alfonso VI's court.
A few weeks later, by August 5, they were in León, the capital city. It was probably here that Duke Odo helped arrange Raymond's marriage to Urraca. She was the daughter who would inherit Alfonso VI's kingdom.
Ruler of Galicia
When Raymond married Urraca, he received the government of the Kingdom of Galicia as a dowry. A dowry was like a gift of land or money given to the groom by the bride's family.
Galicia at that time included the County of Portugal and the County of Coimbra. However, in 1095, King Alfonso VI gave Portugal and Coimbra to Raymond's cousin, Henry of Burgundy. Henry was the father of Afonso Henriques of Portugal, who would become the first king of Portugal.
During his time as ruler, Raymond was called by many important titles. These included Count, Dominus (Lord), Prince, Emperor, and Consul of Galicia. These titles showed that he had great power in his lands. People said he ruled with "near absolute power."
His Family
Raymond was the father of Alfonso VII of León and Castile. Alfonso VII was born around 1104 or 1105 and became king of Galicia in 1111.
Raymond also had a brother who later became Pope Callixtus II. This shows that Raymond's family was very important and influential in Europe.
