About Reginald R. Robinson
Early Life and Music
Reginald Robinson grew up in the city of Chicago. He taught himself how to play music. His love for ragtime music started when he was in 7th grade. Reginald's mother bought a piano for him. For the next three years, he spent his time learning music by himself.
In 1988, Reginald took piano lessons. His teacher was Theodore Bargman in downtown Chicago. He also learned how to sight-read music. This means he could play music just by looking at the notes. Reginald also started writing his own songs. He wrote music in different styles, including ragtime piano.
Becoming a "Genius"
In 1992, Reginald met another pianist named Jon Weber. Jon helped Reginald record his own songs. This recording was a "demo," which is like a sample of his music. Jon also helped Reginald get his first public show. It was at a place called The Green Mill.
In December 1993, Reginald was a guest on a radio show. It was called "Piano Jazz" with Marian McPartland. This was a big step for his career. In 2004, Reginald won the "genius award" from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. This award celebrates people who are very creative and original.
