Regional parliaments of Russia facts for kids
The regional parliaments of Russia are like local governments or councils in different parts of Russia. Russia is a very big country, and it's divided into many areas called federal subjects. Each of these areas has its own parliament.
These parliaments help make rules and decisions for their specific region. There are 85 of these regional parliaments across Russia. The biggest one is the State Assembly of the Republic of Bashkortostan, which has 110 members. The smallest is the Duma of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, with only 15 members. People who are chosen to be part of these parliaments serve for five years.
What Are They Called?
The regional parliaments in Russia have many different names. It can be a bit confusing because they don't all use the same title!
Here are some of the most common names:
- Legislative Assembly: This is a very popular name, used by 31 parliaments.
- Regional Duma: Another common name, used by 22 parliaments.
- State Assembly: Used by 5 parliaments.
- State Council: Used by 6 parliaments.
- People's Assembly or Khural: These names are also used in some regions.
Even though they have different names, they all do a similar job: they represent the people of their region and help govern.
Who Is in Charge?
In most of these regional parliaments, one political party is very strong. As of December 2020, the party called United Russia has the most members in 79 out of the 85 parliaments. This means they have a big say in what happens in those regions.
Other parties also have members in these parliaments, like the Communist Party and the Liberal Democratic Party. Having different parties helps make sure many different ideas are heard.
