The Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church is a very special building. You can find it in Richmond, Indiana, at 11th and North "A" Streets. It's known for its beautiful design.

This church was designed by architects Sidney Badgley and William H. Nicklas. They were from Cleveland, Ohio. Construction started in 1904, and the church opened on May 13, 1906.

Who Built and Designed the Church?

A Gift from Daniel G. Reid

A man named Daniel G. Reid paid for the entire church. He built it to honor his parents, Daniel Reid and Anna Gray Reid. It was a loving way to remember them.

Famous Designers Inside

The inside of the church is just as amazing. The beautiful windows and other interior designs were created by Louis Comfort Tiffany. His company, Tiffany Studios, was very famous for its art.

The Church Organ

The church also has a historic organ. It was first built by Hook and Hastings. Later, in 1958, the Wicks Organ Company rebuilt it. This organ is still used today. In 2007, it was even featured in a special concert.

What Happened to the Church?

Facing Challenges

Over time, fewer and fewer people attended the church. By November 5, 2017, the church congregation was very small. Because of this, the church had to close its doors.

On the Endangered List

After it closed, the building was in danger. It was placed on the "Ten Most Endangered List" by Indiana Landmarks. This list highlights important buildings that need help to be saved.

Saving the Church Building

Volunteers Step In

In 2019, a group of volunteers decided to help. They worked with the Whitewater Valley Presbytery, which owns the building. Their goal was to start saving and preserving the church.

A New Purpose

The main part of the church, called the sanctuary, is great for performances. The volunteers formed a Steering Committee. They started planning many concerts and shows there. You can now hear classical music, jazz, and bluegrass. Thanks to these efforts, the church is no longer on the "Ten Most Endangered List."

The Reid Center

In 2022, a group called The Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church and Community Center, Inc. bought the property. They are also known as The Reid Center. They continue to work on preserving this historic building.
