Reindeer Island is an island found in the northern part of Lake Winnipeg. This lake is located in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The island is closer to the western side of the lake.
No people live on Reindeer Island. In May 1976, it became Manitoba's very first ecological reserve. This means it is a special protected area for nature. It was set up under a law called The Crown Lands Act, which helps manage public lands. Reindeer Island is about 130 kilometers (81 miles) southeast of a town called Grand Rapids.
Island Geography
Reindeer Island is quite large. It stretches about 27 kilometers (17 miles) long. At its widest point, it is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) across. The total area of the island is 13,680 hectares (33,800 acres).
Island Weather
There isn't a weather station directly on Reindeer Island. However, the southern part of Manitoba, where the island is, has a four-season climate. This means the weather changes a lot between winter, spring, summer, and fall.
In winter, the lake freezes over for many months. This means the island's weather is not made milder by the lake. In spring, places near the northern part of the lake, like Grand Rapids, see a delay in warmer weather. In summer, the daily temperature changes are less extreme than in Winnipeg or other parts of southern Manitoba. This effect is likely even stronger on Reindeer Island because it is in the middle of the lake.
Island Plants and Animals
Scientists once thought that a bird called the Caspian tern used the west coast of Reindeer Island for breeding. This idea came from Eric Dunlop, a naturalist. He was collecting samples for the Carlisle Museum in Carlisle, England, in 1914 and 1915.
