Relief is a small, unincorporated community located in Mitchell County, North Carolina, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but without its own local government.
This community sits right next to the North Toe River. You can reach Relief by taking Relief Road (which is also known as SR 1314) off North Carolina Highway 197 (NC 197).
The Story Behind Relief's Name
The name "Relief" has an interesting history! Back in 1870, there was a store owned by Squire Peterson. This store sold a special product called "Hart's Relief." People who used this product often felt a sense of "relief" from their troubles.
Because of how popular this product was, the area eventually became known as Relief.
Post Office History
The Relief Post Office was officially opened in 1888. Over the years, it took over mail services for several nearby communities.
- In 1917, it started handling mail for Street.
- In 1949, it began serving Poplar.
- In 1951, it added Tipton Hill to its mail routes.
However, the Relief Post Office eventually closed in 1974. After that, people in Relief received their mail through a rural letter carrier service from Green Mountain.
