Remigius of Lyon facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Remigius (died October 28, 875) was an important archbishop of Lyon. He was a powerful church leader in France during the 9th century.

Remigius: A Key Church Leader

Remigius worked closely with the previous Archbishop of Lyon, Amulo. On March 31, 852, Remigius became the new archbishop. This was a very important position in the church.

He played a big role in the history of the church in France. From 855 to 863, he held a powerful job called Archicapellanus. This meant he was a chief chaplain, often very close to the king and advising him on church matters.

Important Church Meetings

Remigius was a leading member in several important church meetings, called synods. He even led the Synod of Valence in 855. These meetings were where church leaders discussed important rules and beliefs.

He was also involved in a major debate called the predestination controversy. This was a big argument about whether God decides everything that will happen beforehand. A monk named Gottschalk started this debate. Remigius, along with other leaders, supported Gottschalk's side.

This put Remigius against another very powerful archbishop, Hincmar of Reims. Hincmar had his own ideas about predestination. At the Synod of Chiersy in 853, Hincmar's ideas were approved.

However, the Synod of Valence, led by Remigius, disagreed with Hincmar's views. They passed six rules against Hincmar's position. These rules were confirmed again at the Synod of Langres in 859. This showed how much influence Remigius had.

At the national Synod of Savonières, which happened right after, Remigius presented these rules to Charles the Bald, who was the king.

Regaining Church Funds

When Remigius became archbishop, he found that some money and property that belonged to his church had been taken away. He worked hard to get these lost funds back. He was very successful in getting the church's money and property returned.

Because of his great work, especially in getting back the church's income, the people who admired him later declared him a saint.

Writings Attributed to Remigius

Some writings have been said to be from Remigius. However, it seems he was not really a writer. Most likely, these writings were actually written by someone else.
