René Toribio was an important French politician from Guadeloupe. He was born on December 10, 1912, in Lamentin and passed away in the same town on July 27, 1990. He served as a Senator for Guadeloupe from 1959 to 1968. He also held the important role of Mayor of Lamentin for many years.

Early Life and Political Beginnings

Before World War II, René Toribio worked as a teacher and a headmaster. During the war, he was part of the French Resistance, a group that secretly fought against the occupation of France.

After the war ended, he was elected as the mayor of his hometown, Lamentin, in 1945. This was his first big step into politics. Two years later, in 1947, he was also chosen as the first "conseiller général" for the Lamentin area. This role is like being a local council member for a specific part of a French department. Guadeloupe had just become a French department in 1946.

In 1949, René Toribio joined a political group called the French Section of the Workers' International (SFIO). He quickly became one of its main leaders in Guadeloupe. He served as the federal secretary for the party in Guadeloupe until 1958.

Leading Guadeloupe's General Council

From 1953 to 1956, René Toribio was the president of the General Council of Guadeloupe. This council helps manage the affairs of the department.

In 1958, he tried to become a member of the French Parliament but was not successful. However, the very next year, in 1959, he was elected as a Senator. This meant he held three important political jobs at the same time: Mayor, conseiller général, and Senator.

Later Career and Legacy

Over the next few years, René Toribio gradually lost some of his political roles. He stopped being a conseiller général in 1967, a Senator in 1968, and Mayor in 1971.

In 1972, he left his political party, the French Socialist Party, to start a new one called the Guadeloupean Socialist Party. He did this because he disagreed with some of the decisions made by the main Socialist Party. He ran in the 1973 elections under his new party but did not win.

Even though he had left the Socialist Party, he supported François Mitterrand when he ran for president in 1974. René Toribio never rejoined the main Socialist Party after that.

In 1989, he successfully ran for mayor of Lamentin again. However, he passed away the following year, in 1990. His son, José Toribio, took over as mayor and also became the new leader of the Guadeloupean Socialist Party.
