The Renaissance Providence Hotel is a famous building in Providence, Rhode Island. It was once known as the Mason Building and is listed as the Masonic Temple on the National Register of Historic Places. This building is special because it was left unfinished for many years.

It was first planned to be a meeting place for the Freemasons, a social and charitable group. Building started in 1927. However, work stopped in 1929 because of a big financial crisis called the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Then, when World War II began, construction was stopped completely.

Even though it was unfinished, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. This happened at the same time as the Veterans Memorial Auditorium next door. In 2004, the building was bought and fixed up. It finally opened as a fancy hotel in 2007.

A Building with a Grand Style

This building stands out on Francis Street. It is right across from the Rhode Island State House, which is a very important government building. The hotel was built in a grand style, like old Greek temples. This style is called Greek Revival or Classical Revival.

Location and New Life

The area around the hotel became very valuable. This happened when the Providence Place Mall opened nearby. In 2004, a company called Sage Hospitality Resources bought the building. They turned it into a beautiful hotel. The hotel welcomed its first guests in June 2007.

The Connected Auditorium

Right next to the hotel is another building called the Veterans Memorial Auditorium (VMA). It is located between the hotel and Interstate 95. This auditorium was originally part of the same big building plan. A small structure on the ground connected it to the Masonic Temple.

Work on the auditorium also stopped at the same time as the Temple. But the auditorium was later finished in the 1950s. So, while the Temple waited many years to be completed, the auditorium was able to open much sooner.
