History of Renault
The community of Renault and the area around it are named after an important person from the early French settlements in Illinois.
Philip Francois Renault's Journey
Philip Francois Renault left his home in Picardy, France, in 1719. He traveled to the New World, which is what North and South America were called back then. On his way, he stopped in Santo Domingo (now the Dominican Republic).
Renault planned to develop mines in the new lands. He was given large areas of land to help him with his mining projects. One of these land grants was meant for growing food. This area was located where Renault is today.
He started a small community called St. Phillipe. This community helped with his farming efforts. However, most people left St. Phillipe by 1765. They moved across the Mississippi River to areas still controlled by France. By 1801, almost no one lived there. Today, very few signs of the original settlement remain.
Glasgow City Becomes Renault
The place we now call Renault was first known as Glasgow City. It was founded by Jame Glasgow in 1860. It was located along an old road that connected St. Louis and Kaskaskia.
In 1883, Glasgow City had 28 homes and about 150 people. Later, the community officially took the name Renault. This was the same name used by the local Post Office.
