This bus was about 12 meters (39 feet) long. Its engine was placed at the back. This design helped make the inside floor of the bus completely flat. This made it easier for passengers to move around.
The bus used a powerful 6-cylinder Renault turbo-diesel engine. This engine had a size of 9.8 liters. It could produce two different levels of power: either 152 kilowatts (204 horsepower) or 187 kilowatts (251 horsepower).
Most R312 buses were built as a complete unit. This means the body and chassis were made together. However, some were also made as just the "rolling chassis." This is like the frame and engine, ready for a different body to be added later.
