The dark-banded renia (also called the sociable renia moth) is a type of moth. Its scientific name is Renia factiosalis. It belongs to a large family of moths called Erebidae.

A scientist named Francis Walker first described this moth in 1859. You can find this moth across a wide area. It lives from southern Canada all the way down to Florida and Texas in the United States.

About the Dark-Banded Renia Moth

This moth is known for its interesting appearance. The distance from one wingtip to the other, called its wingspan, is about 24 millimeters. That's roughly the length of a small paperclip!

When Do They Fly?

Adult dark-banded renia moths are usually seen flying from May to September. The number of times they reproduce in a year, called "generations," depends on where they live. In the colder north-east, they have one generation each year. In places like Missouri, they have two generations. Further south, where it's warmer, they can have many generations throughout the year.

What Do Young Moths Eat?

The young moths are called larvae. These larvae are like caterpillars. They feed on "organic matter," which means things that were once alive. This includes dead leaves and other decaying plant material. They help to break down these materials in nature.
