Renya Katarine Ramirez (born 1959) is an important Ho-Chunk American scholar. She is an expert in anthropology, which is the study of human societies and cultures. Renya Ramirez is also an author and a Native feminist. This means she supports equal rights and opportunities for Native American women.

Today, she works as a professor of anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has written two books about Native American culture.

Early Life and Education

Renya K. Ramirez was born in 1959. Her parents were Woesha Cloud North and Robert Carver North. She grew up with three sisters and one brother.

Renya is the youngest granddaughter of two well-known Native American leaders. These were Elizabeth Bender Roe Cloud and Henry Roe Cloud. She is also a registered member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.

In 1999, Renya Ramirez earned her Ph.D. from the Stanford Graduate School of Education. Her main project for this degree was called Healing through grief: Native Americans re-imagining, culture, community and citizenship in San Jose, California. Her professor, Renato Rosaldo, helped guide her work.

Career and Work

Renya Ramirez is a professor of anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is known as a Native feminist scholar. This means she studies and writes about the experiences of Native American women. She also explores how their cultures and traditions are important today.

Beyond teaching and writing, Renya Ramirez also works in film. She was the executive producer, co-producer, screenwriter, and co-director for a film. The film is titled Standing in the Place of Fear: Legacy of Henry Roe Cloud.
