The Republican–Socialist Conjunction (which means Republican-Socialist Alliance in Spanish) was a group of political parties in Spain. They decided to work together for elections. This alliance started in 1909 and lasted until 1919.

During its time, the alliance included different parties. However, it always had the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) as a main member. It also always included several groups who believed in republicanism. This means they wanted Spain to be a republic, not a monarchy with a king or queen. The alliance ended in December 1919. This happened after the PSOE decided to leave the group.

What Was This Alliance?

The Republican–Socialist Conjunction was an "electoral coalition." This means different political parties joined forces to try and win more seats in the government. They shared some similar ideas, even if they weren't exactly the same. Their main goals were to bring about changes in Spain. They wanted more fairness for everyone.

Main Ideas of the Alliance

The parties in this group believed in several key ideas:

  • Republicanism: They wanted Spain to be a republic. This means the country would be led by elected officials, not a king.
  • Socialism: They believed in making society more equal. This included fairer wages and better conditions for workers.
  • Progressivism: They wanted to make progress and bring new ideas to the government. They supported modern changes.
  • Federalism: Some members wanted different regions of Spain to have more power. They believed in a system where local areas could make more of their own decisions.

Who Was Part of the Alliance?

The Republican–Socialist Conjunction was made up of several different political parties over the years. The main group that was always there was the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). This party focused on workers' rights and social equality.

Other parties joined and left the alliance at different times. These included:

  • The Radical Republican Party (PRR) from 1909 to 1912.
  • The Republican Union Party (PUR) from 1909 to 1910.
  • The Republican Nationalist Federal Union (UFNR) from 1911 to 1912.
  • The Republican Party (PRep) from 1913 to 1917.
  • The Federal Republican Party (PRF) from 1916 to 1919.
  • The Autonomist Republican Union Party (PURA) from 1916 to 1919.

These parties came together because they had common goals. They wanted to see big changes in how Spain was governed. They aimed to challenge the traditional political groups of the time.

Why Did the Alliance End?

The Republican–Socialist Conjunction lasted for about ten years. It ended in December 1919. The main reason for its end was that the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) decided to leave the alliance. Different political groups often form and break apart as their goals or situations change.
