The Story of Eddie Malone
The story begins with twelve-year-old Eddie Malone. He finds himself involved with a local group known as the "Reservoir Pups."
Eddie's family situation changes, and he moves with his mother to a new home. His mother starts a new job as a nurse at the Royal Victoria Maternity Hospital in Belfast. The hospital is located in an older part of the city, but they make the move anyway.
Soon after they arrive, Bernard Scuttles, the chief of hospital security, suspects Eddie of causing trouble in the neighborhood. He also believes Eddie is part of the "Reservoir Pups" gang. Eddie's mother is upset and scolds him for this.
Since everyone already thinks he is part of the gang, Eddie decides to join them. The gang gives him a task: to get secret security codes from Scuttles' computer. While Eddie is trying to do this, he overhears a shocking secret. Someone is planning to take twelve babies from the hospital nursery without permission. Eddie immediately stops his mission for the gang.
When Eddie returns to the gang without completing his task, they become very angry with him. They warn him to "watch his back," meaning he should be careful. Eddie then decides he must stop the plan to take the babies all by himself.
