Restoran Sederhana is a popular Indonesian restaurant chain. It serves delicious Padang cuisine, which is a type of food from West Sumatra. The first Sederhana restaurant opened in 1972. Today, there are over 100 locations across Indonesia and even some branches in Malaysia.
The Story of Sederhana
The Sederhana restaurant chain began from a small food stall. This stall was opened in 1972 by a man named Bustaman. He had moved to Jakarta from Tanah Datar Regency in West Sumatra.
By 1975, Bustaman opened a second place in West Jakarta. He called this new place "Singgalang Jaya." This name came from Mount Singgalang, a famous mountain. Between 1975 and 1984, he opened five more Singgalang Jaya restaurants.
In 1978, the first Singgalang Jaya in Roxy closed. So, a new Sederhana restaurant opened in Rawamangun, East Jakarta. By 1995, Bustaman was running ten restaurants. The Rawamangun branch is now the main Sederhana location.
The first Sederhana restaurant outside Jakarta opened in Surabaya in 1996. From this branch, the idea of franchising began in 1998. Franchising means other people can open a Sederhana restaurant using the same name and recipes. This helped Sederhana grow outside of Java. The company even had a central kitchen in Ciledug to make spice mixes for all its restaurants.
How Sederhana Operates
Sederhana is a very popular restaurant chain in Indonesia. A study in 2008 said it was the most popular fast food chain in the country. Later, in 2018, another study found that Sederhana was still the top restaurant chain. It had about 28.4 million customers between 2017 and 2018.
Sederhana is especially popular outside big cities like Jakarta. In these areas, it is often more popular than international fast food chains such as KFC. By late 2020, Sederhana had more than 100 locations. This included three restaurants in Malaysia. The chain also had about 3,000 employees working for it.
