About Retreat, Texas
Where is Retreat?
Retreat is found in south-central Navarro County. It is just south of a larger city called Corsicana. The town covers an area of about 5 square miles (12.9 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part covered by water.
The History of Retreat
The area where Retreat is now was first settled in the 1840s. It was originally known as Beeman's School House. For many years, a log building served as both the school and the church for the community.
This school building was moved several times as the population shifted. Because it was moved, someone suggested calling the settlement "Retreat," and the name stuck!
By 1900, a public school was open in Retreat. In 1906, about 50 students were enrolled there. In the mid-1930s, the town had a store, a cotton gin, a cemetery, and several homes.
After World War II, the store closed. However, the number of people living in Retreat has grown in recent years. This is because it is close to Corsicana, where many residents work. In the mid-1960s, about 100 people lived there. By 1990, the population had grown to 334.
