Return Point facts for kids
Return Point is a rocky slope found at the very end of Coronation Island. This island is part of the South Orkney Islands, which are located in Antarctica. Return Point is about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) west-north-west of another spot called Cheal Point.
How Return Point Got Its Name
Return Point was first discovered a long time ago, on December 7, 1821. Two captains, George Powell from Britain and Nathaniel Palmer from America, found it while exploring. Captain Powell named it "Return Point" because after he landed there and looked around, he went straight back to his ship.
A Special Place for Birds
Return Point is part of a very important area for birds. This area, which also includes Cheal Point, is about 194 hectares (480 acres) big. It has been named an Important Bird Area (IBA) by an organization called BirdLife International.
Why Is It Important for Birds?
This area is special because it's home to a huge breeding colony of chinstrap penguins. About 38,000 pairs of these penguins come here to build their nests and raise their chicks! They choose spots that are free of ice to make their homes.
