How Reute Was Formed
Reute has an interesting past! It was formed because of a big religious change in Switzerland called the Reformation. During this time, some communities stayed with the old religion, while others chose a new one.
In 1597, the canton of Appenzell was divided. This happened because people had different religious beliefs. The area called Hirschberg had mostly people who followed the old faith. They wanted to stay with Innerrhoden, which was the Catholic part.
However, a smaller group in Hirschberg followed the new faith. They wanted to join Ausserrhoden, which was the Protestant part. So, a special agreement called the Landteilungsbrief (Land division treaty) was made.
This agreement separated the land owned by the Protestants from Hirschberg. This new area became the municipality of Reute. It joined the Protestant Ausserrhoden. The Catholic part of Hirschberg became part of the Innerrhoden town of Oberegg.
