Revaz "Rezo" Chkheidze (Georgian: რევაზ "რეზო" ჩხეიძე) was a famous Georgian film director. He was born on December 8, 1926, and passed away on May 3, 2015. He is best known for his movies made during the Soviet era, especially his 1964 World War II film, Father of a Soldier. He was recognized as a People's Artist of the USSR, which is a very high honor for artists.

About Revaz Chkheidze
Revaz Chkheidze was born in Kutaisi, a city in Georgia. His father, Davit Chkheidze, was a writer.
His Education and Early Career
From 1943 to 1946, Revaz studied acting at the Tbilisi State Institute of Theatre. Later, he continued his studies in Moscow at VGIK from 1949 to 1953. There, he learned from famous directors like Sergei Yutkevich and Mikhail Romm.
Revaz Chkheidze directed many films and even a TV mini-series between 1953 and 2008. He became well-known with his film Magdana's Donkey. He directed this movie with Tengiz Abuladze. It won an award for Best Fiction Short at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival.
His 1964 film Father of a Soldier was shown at the 4th Moscow International Film Festival. Another one of his films, The Saplings, released in 1972, also won an award at the 8th Moscow International Film Festival.
His Role in Georgian Filmmaking
During the Soviet era, Revaz Chkheidze was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He held important positions in the film industry in Georgia. From 1963 to 1981, he was a secretary for the Georgian SSR Union of Cinematography. This group made big decisions about movies. He was also chosen twice to be part of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, which was a major government body.
In 1973, he became the executive director of Georgia's Kartuli Pilmi studio. This was a big film studio, and he kept this job for many years, even into the 1990s.
Awards and Recognition
Revaz Chkheidze received many awards for his work. Some of these include:
- The title of People’s Artist of the Soviet Union in 1980.
- Prizes at the All-Union Film Festival in 1973 and 1981.
- The Lenin Prize in 1986.
- Georgia's Order of Honor in 1996.
- Honorary Citizenship of Tbilisi in 2001.
In 2013, a special star honoring him was placed in front of the Rustaveli Cinema in Tbilisi. This was done by Georgia's Ministry of Culture.
His Family and Passing
Revaz Chkheidze passed away on May 3, 2015. He was buried on May 7 at the Didube Pantheon in Tbilisi.
His daughter, Tamar, was born in 1960. She is a historian and was involved in politics in Georgia during the 1980s and early 1990s.
