The Review and Herald Publishing Association was a very old company that printed books, magazines, and more. It was one of two main publishing companies for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America. They made books, magazines, study guides, CDs, videos, and even games! They also printed the Adventist Review magazine.

In 2014, another company called Pacific Press Publishing Association took over the Review and Herald. The office in Maryland closed, and some of its workers and things moved to Idaho.

A Look Back: The History of Review and Herald

The story of the Review and Herald Publishing Association began in 1849. A man named James White started it by printing a paper called The Present Truth. In 1850, he started another one called The Advent Review.

From these small beginnings, the company grew. It moved to Battle Creek, Michigan.

A Big Fire and New Homes

On December 30, 1902, a huge fire destroyed the company's offices. After the fire, the main office moved to Takoma Park, Maryland.

In the 1950s, the company created a famous set of books called The Bible Story. These books were written by Arthur S. Maxwell. What made them special?

  • They had 411 stories from the Bible.
  • Every page had colorful pictures. This was very expensive for a book publisher back then!

In 1983, the company moved again. This time, it went to a brand new, large building in Hagerstown, Maryland. This new place cost $14 million and was on a 127-acre campus. At that time, about 350 people worked there.

Joining Forces

Another publishing company, started by Edson White, was in Nashville, Tennessee. It was first called Gospel Herald Publishing Company. In 1901, its name changed to Southern Publishing Association. This company joined with the Review and Herald in 1980.

Review and Herald in Movies

The Review and Herald Publishing Association is even mentioned in a movie! A documentary film from 2014, called War in Heaven, War on Earth: The Birth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church During the American Civil War, talks about how the company started.
