About Reynolds Calthorpe

Reynolds Calthorpe was the oldest son of a man also named Reynolds Calthorpe. His family lived in a place called Elvetham. He went to school at Bury St Edmunds Grammar School.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1713, Reynolds Calthorpe was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP). This happened during a big election across Britain. He represented a place called Hindon.

At that time, elections in some areas, like Hindon, were not always fair. Sometimes, people would try to influence votes in ways that weren't right.

His Time in Politics

Reynolds Calthorpe was part of the Whig political party. In the election, he and another Whig candidate won against two candidates from the Tory party.

While in Parliament, Reynolds Calthorpe made an important vote. He voted against removing a famous writer and politician named Richard Steele from Parliament.

A Sad Ending

Sadly, Reynolds Calthorpe became very ill with smallpox. This was a serious disease that was common at the time. He passed away on April 10, 1714, when he was only 24 years old.

Because of his unexpected death, his seat in Parliament became empty. It stayed empty until the next big election in 1715. After that, his father was elected to the same seat.

Reynolds Calthorpe was buried in Elvetham, the place where his family lived.
