Reza Dormishian is an Iranian film director, screenwriter, and film producer. He was born in Tehran, Iran, on November 6, 1981. He has worked with famous directors like Dariush Mehrjui and Alireza Davood Nejad as an assistant director.

Early Career and First Films

Reza Dormishian started his career in 1997 by writing about films for different newspapers. He also worked as an editor for cinema books and magazines. Later, he became an assistant to well-known Iranian filmmakers. He began making short films and documentaries in 2002.

Hatred (2012)

His first full-length movie was called Hatred. He made this film on his own in Istanbul, Turkey. The story is about an Iranian couple who are refugees in Istanbul and shows their strong feelings of love and hate. Film critics and writers liked Hatred a lot. Iranian critics even gave it three awards for Best Directing, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing.

Even though Hatred faced some challenges being shown in Iran, it was screened and praised at many international film festivals. These included the 36th Montreal World Film Festival in Canada and the 28th Warsaw Film Festival in Poland.

I'm Not Angry! (2014)

Reza Dormishian's second feature film, I'm not angry!, was a very talked-about movie in Iranian cinema in 2014. This drama looked at social issues. It was the only Iranian film shown in the Panorama Section of the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.

When I'm not angry! was shown at the 32nd Fajr Film Festival in Iran, about 15 minutes of the film had been removed. Even with these changes, audiences really liked it. However, some groups strongly opposed the film. Because of this, the film festival organizers asked Reza Dormishian not to accept his awards and to remove his film from the festival. They announced that he had given up his awards to help keep things calm in Iranian cinema. The next day, the jury members confirmed that I'm not angry! had indeed won awards and that Dormishian had agreed to the request under pressure. Since then, the film has not been allowed to be shown in Iran.
