Reza Rahadian's Acting Journey
Starting as a Model
In 2004, Reza Rahadian won a "Top Guest" award from an Indonesian magazine called Aneka. Even though he wasn't a professional model, he saw modeling as a way to help him become an actor.
First Steps in Acting
Thanks to his modeling fame, Reza was cast in several Indonesian soap operas, known as sinetron. Some of these included Culunnya Pacarku and Idola. He made his first movie appearance in 2007 in a horror-comedy film called Film Horor. The next year, he acted in another horror movie, Ghost Island 2.
Moving to Serious Roles
In 2009, Reza Rahadian starred in a movie that critics really liked, Hanung Bramantyo's Woman with a Turban. After this, he decided he wanted to act in fewer horror films. He had first tried out for a small part, but the director, Hanung Bramantyo, chose him for a bigger role. He played Samsuddin, a challenging character who was the main character's husband. That same year, he acted in four more films, including three comedies.
Award-Winning Performances
The next year, in 2010, Reza Rahadian acted in four films. Two important ones were 3 Hati Dua Dunia, Satu Cinta and How Funny (This Country Is).
- 3 Hati Dua Dunia, Satu Cinta was about love between people of different faiths. It won a Citra Award for Best Film at the 2010 Indonesian Film Festival.
- How Funny (This Country Is) was chosen to represent Indonesia at the 83rd Academy Awards.
In 2011, Reza Rahadian appeared in four films. One of his roles was Tudo, a dolphin expert, in Kamila Andini's first movie, The Mirror Never Lies. To prepare for this role, he studied dolphins at Ancol in North Jakarta. Besides acting, he also directed a short film called Sebelah (A Side).
Transforming for Roles
In 2012, Reza Rahadian acted in six films. For the movie BrokenHearts, he played a character with anorexia. To get ready for this role, he lost 10 kg (22 lb). He also starred in Perahu Kertas and its sequel, which were based on a popular novel. In these films, he played Remi, a businessman who becomes a love interest. A reviewer from The Jakarta Post said Reza Rahadian performed "as expected," showing the character's inner struggles.
Playing a President
At the end of 2012, Reza Rahadian took on a very special role. He played former Indonesian president B.J. Habibie in the biopic Habibie & Ainun. This movie told the love story between Habibie and his wife Ainun, played by Bunga Citra Lestari. Critics praised his performance, saying he perfectly captured the former president's look and actions. He continued this role in the prequel Rudy Habibie in 2016.
In 2017, Reza Rahadian worked again with Adinia Wirasti in the movie Critical Eleven. He is also planning to direct his first full-length movie, On Your Lap, which is expected in 2025.
