Rhea Tregebov (born 1953) is a Canadian writer. She is known for her poetry, novels, and popular children's picture books. Rhea Tregebov lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.
She has taught and helped many Canadian poets. Her poetry often explores everyday life with honesty and understanding. An important influence for her was the poet Pablo Neruda. He wrote about how poetry "arrived in search of me." Tregebov has written two novels, Rue des Rosiers and The Knife-Sharpener’s Bell. She has also written five children's books that many young readers enjoy. From 2021 to 2023, she was the leader of The Writers' Union of Canada.
Early Life and Education
Rhea Tregebov was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She studied at several universities, including the University of Manitoba, Cornell, and Boston.
Career as a Writer and Teacher
After her studies, Tregebov lived in Toronto. There, she worked as a freelance writer and editor. She also taught creative writing. She taught classes at Ryerson University and at the Banff Centre for the Arts.
In 2005, she joined the Creative Writing Program at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She became an associate professor in 2012. At UBC, she focused on teaching poetry, writing for children, and translation. She retired from UBC in June 2017. Today, she is an Associate Professor Emerita, which means she is a retired professor who still holds an honored title.
