A Look Back: Rheatown's History
Rheatown is one of the very old places in Greene County, Tennessee. People first started living there in the early 1780s. It was on an old road where horse-drawn carriages, called stagecoaches, used to travel. This road connected two towns, Jonesborough and Greeneville. Even today, one of the main roads there is still called "Old Stage Road."
By the 1820s, Rheatown had grown. It had its own post office and different shops. It was named after a person named John Rhea. He was a Congressman, which means he was a leader who helped make laws for the country. In 1856, Rheatown officially became a town. However, it is now an unincorporated community, meaning it doesn't have its own local government anymore.
