How Rhodesville Got Its Name
Rhodesville gets its name from the Rhodes family. They were some of the very first people to settle in this area. The Rhodes family moved here from a place called Newberry County in South Carolina.
Spencer Rhodes and Early Businesses
One important person from the Rhodes family was Spencer Rhodes. He was a busy entrepreneur in the community. Spencer Rhodes ran several important businesses that helped the early settlers. He had a general store where people could buy supplies. He also operated a blacksmith shop, which made and repaired metal tools. Most importantly, he ran a mill, which was likely used to grind grain.
Rhodesville's Post Office
For a time, Rhodesville even had its own post office. It operated under the name Rhodesville from 1889 to 1907. This means people living there could send and receive mail right in their community.
