He was also part of the Ospreys youth teams. He won a trophy with the under-18s in 2005–06. He also played junior Rugby league for Bridgend Blue Bulls.
Playing for the Ospreys
Rhys made his first appearance for the Ospreys senior team in March 2008. He came on as a substitute in a game against Ulster. He played in a few more games that season. After that, he signed a new four-year contract with the team.
He got more chances to play during the 2008–09 season. This was because other scrum-halves were injured. He played 11 games that season. In the 2010–11 season, he became the Ospreys' main scrum-half. He played very well when the regular scrum-half was away with the Wales team.
Rhys had a shoulder injury at the end of that season. But he recovered and started the 2011–12 season as the main scrum-half. He scored his first try for the Ospreys in the first game of that season. He scored three more tries before the season ended.
In March 2015, Rhys signed a special contract. This contract was between his club and the Welsh Rugby Union.
Moving to France and Back
In October 2017, it was announced that Rhys would leave the Ospreys. He had played for them for ten years. He moved to a French club called Toulon in the Top 14 league. In March 2018, Rhys got a knee injury. This meant he missed the rest of the season. It also ended his time with the Ospreys earlier than planned.
In December 2019, Rhys decided to end his contract with Toulon early. He wanted to return to the Ospreys in the summer of 2020. He then signed a short-term deal with Bath Rugby in February 2020. He played one game for Bath before returning to the Ospreys.
In July 2023, Rhys went back to France to play. He joined a team called Biarritz. He played one game for them and scored a try. In July 2024, he received a four-year ban from rugby. He stated that he would appeal this decision.
