Discovering the Rialto Theatre
The Rialto Theatre was built between 1923 and 1924. It was designed by a Montreal architect named Joseph-Raoul Gariépy. He was known for designing many theatres and hospitals. The Rialto was inspired by the grand Paris Opera House. This famous building has a style called Napoleon III style.
Inside the Rialto Theatre
The inside of the Rialto Theatre is just as amazing. It was designed by Emmanuel Briffa. He created the look for over sixty movie theatres across Canada. The interior of the Rialto is in the elegant Louis XVI style. For many years, the Rialto was a popular place to watch movies. It operated as a cinema until the 1990s.
A New Chapter for the Rialto
The Rialto Theatre has seen many changes since the year 2000. All of the theatre seats were taken out. There were even plans to turn it into a steakhouse! After almost thirty years, the owner, Elias Kalogeras, sold the theatre. This happened in March 2010.
The new owners are Le Groupe Merveilles Inc. They are Ezio Carosielli and Luisa Sassano. Since buying it, they have worked to protect the theatre. They are also restoring its unique and beautiful architecture.
