What is the Rialto Theatre?
The Rialto Theatre is a beautiful building on Park Avenue in Montreal. It was built a long time ago, between 1923 and 1924. It was first used as a cinema where people could watch movies.
Who designed the Rialto Theatre?
A talented architect from Montreal named Joseph-Raoul Gariépy designed the Rialto. He was known for designing theaters and hospitals. The outside look of the Rialto was inspired by the famous Paris Opera House in France.
The inside of the theater was designed by Emmanuel Briffa. He was a very busy designer who worked on more than sixty movie theaters across Canada! The inside style of the Rialto is called Louis XVI style, which is very fancy and elegant.
What happened to the Rialto Theatre?
The Rialto Theatre showed movies for many years, all the way until the 1990s. After that, it went through a lot of changes. For example, all the theater seats were taken out. Someone even tried to turn it into a steakhouse restaurant!
Who owns the Rialto Theatre now?
For almost thirty years, a person named Elias Kalogeras owned the Rialto. In March 2010, he sold it to a company called Le Groupe Merveilles Inc. The new owners, Ezio Carosielli and Luisa Sassano, wanted to protect the theater. They have been working to bring back its special and unique design.
