Ribeira Brava is a special area in Cape Verde called a municipality. Think of it like a county or a district. It's found on the eastern side of São Nicolau Island.
This municipality covers a big part of the island, about 65% of its total area, which is 224.8 square kilometers. It's also where most of the island's people live. In 2010, about 7,580 people called Ribeira Brava home, making up 59% of the island's population. The main town and center of this municipality is also called Ribeira Brava.

How Ribeira Brava Was Formed
The municipality of Ribeira Brava is fairly new. It was created in 2005. Before that, there was one larger municipality called São Nicolau.
In 2005, São Nicolau was split into two separate parts. The southwestern part became the Municipality of Tarrafal de São Nicolau. The northeastern part became what we now know as the Municipality of Ribeira Brava.
