Island Location and How to Reach It
Ribeyre Island has a very interesting location. It is "trapped" between an old path the Wabash River used to take and the river's main channel today. This old path now forms the state boundary between Indiana and Illinois. Because of this, even though the island is officially part of Indiana, you can only get to it from the Illinois side of the river. This makes it quite unique!
What You'll Find on the Island
The island is mostly covered with farm fields. This means people use the land to grow crops. There might also be one house or building on the island. If you visit the southern part of Ribeyre Island, you would see many "sloughs." Sloughs are swampy or muddy areas, often found near rivers, where water moves slowly. They are important habitats for different kinds of plants and animals.
The Wabash River
The Wabash River is a major river in Indiana. It flows for about 500 miles (800 kilometers) and is the longest free-flowing river east of the Mississippi River in the United States. The river plays an important role in the geography and history of Indiana and Illinois. It has shaped the landscape, including creating islands like Ribeyre Island, over many years.
