Early Life and Education
Ricard Pérez Casado studied at several universities. He learned about economics at the University of Barcelona. He also studied political and social science at the Complutense University of Madrid. Later, he earned a special degree in history from the University of Valencia.
During a time in Spain called the Franco era, he became interested in politics. He joined a group called the Valencian Socialist Party (PSV). This group later joined with the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).
Serving as Mayor of Valencia
In 1979, Ricard Pérez Casado became the mayor of Valencia. He took over from the previous mayor, Ferran Martínez Castellano. The previous mayor had left the party after some disagreements.
Pérez Casado was very popular. People voted for him again in 1983 and 1987. This meant he was mayor for many years. However, he decided to leave his job in 1988. This was because he had some disagreements with other members of his political party in Valencia.
Later Political Roles
After being mayor, Ricard Pérez Casado took on other important jobs. In 1996, he worked for the European Union. His job was to help manage the city of Mostar in Bosnia. This was a time when the city needed help to rebuild.
In 2000, he became involved in national politics in Spain. He was chosen to be a deputy for Valencia. This meant he represented Valencia in the national parliament, called the Congress of Deputies. He served in this role for one term.
He has also been a vice-president for the Council of European Municipalities and Regions. This group helps cities and regions work together across Europe. Today, he is still part of the Federal Committee of the PSOE. This is an important group within his political party.
