Ricardo Iorio (born June 25, 1962 – died October 24, 2023) was a famous Argentine heavy metal singer and bass player.
He was a key figure in Argentine heavy metal music. Ricardo Iorio helped start the band V8 in 1979. Later, he formed Hermética in 1988. From 1995 until his death, he was the lead singer and main songwriter for Almafuerte.
His songs often told stories about everyday life. They focused on people from working-class neighborhoods. He also wrote about Argentine "metalheads," who are fans of heavy metal music.
Even though he played bass in his early bands, he later focused on singing. He was very proud of being Argentine. He often mixed traditional Argentine music styles like tango and gaucho culture with heavy metal.
Biography
Ricardo Iorio was born in Ciudadela, Argentina. He became one of the most important musicians in Argentine heavy metal.
V8
Ricardo Iorio met Ricardo "el Chofa" Moreno in 1978. They were both 16 years old. They became friends because they both loved Led Zeppelin. They started a band that played songs by Black Sabbath. Soon, they began writing their own music.
After some changes, Iorio played bass and sang. "El Chofa" played guitar. They named their band V8, like the powerful car engine.
V8 played many concerts. They became known for their strong music. In 1983, they released their first album, "Luchando por el metal." A famous guitarist named Pappo helped them.
The band faced challenges, including problems with their managers. They recorded a second album, "Un paso más en la batalla." Later, some band members tried to move to Brazil. This did not work out as planned.
The band had more member changes. They also had disagreements about their music style. Eventually, V8 broke up in 1987.
Hermética
After V8 ended, Ricardo Iorio started a new band. He teamed up with singer Claudio O'Connor, drummer Fabián Spataro, and guitarist Antonio Romano. They named the band Hermética. The name came from an old idea called hermeticism. Iorio felt it fit the Argentine heavy metal scene.
Their first show was in Buenos Aires. Soon, Fabián Spataro left. Tony Scotto became the new drummer. In 1989, they released their first album, also called "Hermética." It was one of the first thrash metal albums made in Argentina. On this album, Ricardo Iorio sang lead vocals on one song for the first time.
The band quickly became popular. They recorded a cover album called Intérpretes. Their next full album, Ácido argentino, sold very well. Hermética even opened for big international bands like Motorhead and Black Sabbath.
In 1993, they released a live album. In 1994, they played at the Monsters of Rock festival. They shared the stage with bands like Slayer and Kiss. Their third album, "Víctimas del vaciamiento," was also very successful.
However, Hermética broke up suddenly in late 1994. Ricardo Iorio said that the relationships between band members had become difficult.
Almafuerte
After Hermética broke up, Iorio formed Almafuerte. He was joined by Claudio Cardacci and Claudio Marciello. In this band, Iorio became the main singer. His former bandmates from Hermética formed a new group called Malón. This led to a friendly rivalry between the two bands.
Almafuerte's first album, "Mundo Guanaco," came out in 1995. It included some cover songs. One was a tango song turned into heavy metal. Another was a folk song. Iorio also made his first music video for the song "El Pibe Tigre."
Their second album, "Del Entorno," was released the next year. It was produced by Flavio Cianciarulo from the band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. Ricardo Iorio also worked on a solo album with Flavio. It was called "Peso Argento."
Almafuerte continued to release new music. In 1998, they released a self-titled album. This album included a song about why Iorio chose the name "Almafuerte" for his band.
In 1999, Almafuerte contributed a song to a movie soundtrack. This song was on their album "A Fondo Blanco." This album also showed Iorio's interest in traditional Tango music.
Ricardo Iorio later moved from Buenos Aires to live in the countryside with his family. He also worked on projects outside of heavy metal. He collaborated with folk musicians like León Gieco. He also recorded songs with his friend, the famous Argentine guitarist Pappo.
Death
Ricardo Iorio passed away on October 24, 2023. He was 61 years old. He felt chest pain and called for an ambulance. Sadly, he died on the way to the hospital. He had no known health problems before this.
