Ricardo Elías Arias: A Brief Presidency
Ricardo Elías Arias played a part in the events that led to the end of President Augusto B. Leguía's government. Many people were unhappy with Leguía's rule, and several groups worked to remove him from power.
Becoming Interim President
After President Leguía was overthrown, General Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro became the provisional (temporary) president. However, Ricardo Elías Arias was not satisfied with this new leadership. He soon began to oppose Sánchez Cerro.
In March 1931, Sánchez Cerro stepped down from the presidency, and his vice president, Olguín, took over. But Olguín was quickly removed from power, and Ricardo Elías Arias then became the interim president.
A Very Short Term
Elías Arias's time as president was very short. He was in charge for only four days! Another leader, Gustavo Jiménez, quickly took his place. Even after being replaced, Elías Arias continued to serve in the new government. He became the President of the Supreme Court and held that important position until 1932.
Ricardo Elías Arias lived until 1951, having played a small but notable role in Peru's political history during a time of change.
