Gustavo Jiménez (born April 5, 1886 – died March 15, 1933) was a Peruvian army officer. He held the rank of colonel. In 1931, he briefly served as the interim president of Peru. This means he was president for a short time while the country was going through changes.
Early Life and Rise to Power
Gustavo Jiménez was born in a city called Tarma, in Peru. He became a colonel in the Peruvian Army. In the early 1930s, Peru faced a lot of political problems. Jiménez was one of the leaders who helped to overthrow the government of President Augusto B. Leguía. This was a big change for the country.
After Leguía's government fell, a new temporary president was chosen. This was General Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro. However, Jiménez and his supporters did not agree with this choice. They kept their military forces ready.
Becoming Interim President
Later, Sánchez Cerro was replaced by another leader, Ricardo Leoncio Elías Arias. On March 5, 1931, Gustavo Jiménez returned to Lima, the capital city. He went to the presidential palace. After talking with Elías, Jiménez became the new president. This happened even though another person, David Samanez Ocampo, was expected to take over that day.
Jiménez's time as president was very short. The country was still in a state of unrest. There was also strong opposition against him, especially from the Navy. Because of these challenges, Jiménez decided to give up power. He handed over the presidency to David Samanez Ocampo on March 11, 1931. This was just six days after he had taken office.
Later Life
Gustavo Jiménez died in Lima on March 15, 1933.
