Ricardo Sanz García (1898–1986) was an important leader of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT), a big workers' union, during the Spanish Civil War. He became the leader of a famous group called the Durruti Column after its first leader passed away.

Ricardo Sanz's Early Life and Work

Ricardo Sanz García was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1898. When he was 18, in 1916, he moved to Barcelona. There, he worked in factories that made cloth. He also joined the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT), which was a powerful union for workers.

Sanz became part of a group called Los Solidarios. This group worked to bring about social change. To stay safe, Sanz went to France for a while. From France, he helped his group by getting them important supplies.

Becoming a Leader

In the 1930s, during the time of the Second Spanish Republic, Ricardo Sanz joined another group called the Federación Anarquista Ibérica (FAI). He grew to be a key leader for the CNT in a region of Spain called Catalonia.

When the Spanish Civil War began, Sanz helped organize groups of CNT volunteers. These groups were ready to fight.

Leading the Durruti Column

In November 1936, a well-known leader named Buenaventura Durruti died. Ricardo Sanz, who had worked closely with Durruti, then took over leadership of the Durruti Column. This was a very important group of fighters.

After some battles, Sanz was held in special camps in France and Algeria. He spent the rest of his life in France. There, he wrote two books about his experiences. Ricardo Sanz passed away in 1986.
