Richard Armstedt was born in a town called Osterburg in what was then Prussian Saxony, a part of Germany. He went to the University of Tübingen and earned a special degree in philosophy in 1885. This degree showed he had studied deeply and understood many complex ideas.

The very next year, he started working as a senior teacher at a school called Altstadt Gymnasium in Königsberg. He worked his way up, and from 1900 to 1921, he became the director of another school in Königsberg, the Kneiphof Gymnasium. He lived in Königsberg for a long time and passed away there.
